OUR HISTORY
Deeply Embedded in Southern Alberta.
Showcasing Agriculture Since 1897
Lethbridge & District Exhibition has a proud tradition that predates the City of Lethbridge, the Calgary Stampede, and the Province of Alberta. It was originally formed as the Lethbridge & District Agricultural Society in 1897 when local ranchers and community-minded citizens organized the first “Lethbridge & District Exhibition”—an Expo to showcase agriculture from the bountiful harvest as well as to promote commerce.
In the early 1900s, small communities around southern Alberta were getting into the sport of rodeo and Lethbridge soon followed, becoming a mainstay at The Fair. At this time, the organization acquired land to the south of downtown, a forty-acre parcel known as Victoria Park (now known as Gyro Park). Shortly thereafter, Lethbridge became a hub community, drawing people from throughout the region for one large celebration.
In 1912, the City of Lethbridge hosted the World Dry Farming Congress at the exhibition grounds, which were expanded significantly for that event and all following ones. The event secured southern Alberta as a premier agricultural production region.
Driving Economic Growth Then & Now
Over the past 75 years, southern Alberta has experienced an agricultural metamorphosis. Since the World Dry Farming Congress in 1912, significant investment in irrigation systems and networks throughout the region have propelled the area into one of the best agricultural production and processing regions in North America.
Throughout this time, Lethbridge & District Exhibition experienced significant developments. The original pavilions were unfortunately lost to fire in the early 1920s and were replaced by Heritage Hall (1926). The original grandstand (1912) was replaced in 1961 and the South Pavilion was developed. The North Pavilion was added in 1971, and the West Pavilion in the 1980s. Finally, in 1999 the Main Pavilion was opened as a trade space that connects the rest of the pavilions into one 124,000 square foot trade and exposition space.
We continue to support the agricultural community by providing spaces for community events and trade shows, as well as hosting our signature events like the Ag Expo, Whoop-Up Days (an evolution of The Fair), Lethbridge Pro Rodeo, Farmers’ Markets, and more.
With the development of the Agri-Hub and Trade Centre, we have the capacity to bring world-class events to Lethbridge and continue to contribute to the growth of our incredible region.
