Partnership with Lethbridge Longhorns baseball adds a community benefit to the traditional tasty treat
Lethbridge, Alta. – A fan favourite Whoop-Up Days snack is also a homerun for the community, as sales of Jumbo Ears will benefit a local baseball program. The Lethbridge & District International Baseball Association, which runs the Lethbridge Longhorns high school program, are this year’s Jumbo Ears charitable partner.
Part of the proceeds from each Jumbo Ears sale will benefit the Longhorns, while members of the program will staff the Jumbo Ears booth throughout Whoop-Up Days, which runs from Aug. 22 to 26. Jumbo Ears are a fried dough snack topped with a delicious combination of icing sugar, sugar, and cinnamon.
“Buying a Jumbo Ear is a time-honoured tradition for many Whoop-Up Days visitors, and with good reason – they’re delicious,” says Mike Warkentin, Lethbridge & District Exhibition CEO. “Having a partner like the Longhorns supports one of our core principles of giving back to our community, but this partnership goes beyond that. We appreciate the Longhorns commitment to volunteering and running the Jumbo Ears booth, producing thousands of Jumbo Ears throughout the fair.”
Lethbridge & District International Baseball Association was founded in 2021 to bring Lethbridge’s best high school baseball talent together as the Lethbridge Longhorns. With Spitz Stadium as their home field, the Longhorns goal is to support high end young talent, developing team members into great citizens, players, and students who are destined to play collegiate ball in the United States and Canada.
“We're thrilled to be back at the Jumbo Ears booth, not only boosting our program but also connecting with the community – a win-win for the Longhorns!” says Chance Wheatley, Longhorns head coach. “Our entire team is excited to serve you, so please stop by and savor a delicious Jumbo Ear while supporting our efforts.”
In addition to being a tasty treat, Jumbo Ears also help tell the Southern Alberta food story, as ingredients are locally sourced and donated, including canola oil from Richardson Oilseed, flour from P&H Milling, and sugar from Lantic/Rogers.
The Jumbo Ears booth is located on the north end of the outdoors portion of Whoop-Up Days, near the new Agri-food Hub & Trade Centre. It’s open during all hours of Whoop-Up Days operations, from noon to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, and from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. from Aug. 23 to 26. Jumbo Ears cost $6 each or $15 for three.
